Over 50 players entered the tournament with club coach Bruce McIver delighting the home crowd by taking the men’s title with victory over Mark Lints from David Lloyd Aberdeen in the final, 7-5 6-0.

The victory served further notice of Bruce’s feared status in Aberdeen, which was heightened even more earlier in the day with a ruthless demolition of Rubislaw’s Martin Harboard, (current champion of the North East Indoors) 6-0 6-0.

The other semi-final saw arguably the match of the tournament, with Stonehaven’s young crowd favourite, Daniel Colvin (21), edged out by Mark Lints in a quite pulsating encounter, 6-4, 6-7 (14-12).

52 player entry is in the words of tournament referee John Purcell a record number of entries for a North East of Scotland tennis event in the last 15 years at least.

In the ladies’ event, Rubislaw’s Karen Crawford, who came into the event having played over 100 tournaments, impressively defeated Bethany Shand from David Lloyd Aberdeen 6-2 6-1.

Karen and Bethany had earlier shown their credentials with victories over established county players Annabel Burns (14) and Aoife Aitken,(15) both from Stonehaven, repectively.

However, the young girls can be proud of their efforts, with Aoife defeating former Stonehaven club champion Fay Duff in the quarter finals, and Annabel providing the sternest test Karen faced all tournament in their semi- final.
