Three-way play-off for Junior Championship

The third and fourth rounds of the Stonehaven Golf Club junior championship were played last week. After three rounds of the scratch competition Ross McAllan had a two stroke lead over Scott Murray. Defending champion Ross Anderson was a further three strokes back and in fourth place a distant eight strokes behind the leader was Kevin Riddell.

It was all change in the final round. Ross McAllan was unable to produce his 2nd and 3rd round form and dropped down the leaderboard with a disappointing 75. Scott Murray maintained his steady form with a 69 and Ross Anderson, determined not to relinquish his title, closed with his second consecutive level par round of 66 to tie with Scott.

Round of the final day however came from Kevin Riddell who produced a sparkling 63 which included a hole in one at the 14th hole. This allowed him to tie with Ross and Scott which now means a three-way 18 hole play-off for the championship will be required. The result of the play-off, which took place on Tuesday this week, will be published next week.

The handicap championship was also played for along with the scratch competition. Early halfway leader James Arandia’s form deserted him in the final two rounds. This allowed Connor Douglas to take the lead after the third round with a fine gross 67 nett 56. But it was the excellent form of Keifer Brown who closed with two fine scores of nett 59 that allowed him to finish with a 4 stroke lead from Mark McIntosh who maintained his second position throughout the competition.

Results: Scratch 275 - Kevin Riddell (68, 73, 71, 63), Ross Anderson (73, 70, 66, 66), Scott Murray (68, 67, 71, 69), 279 - Ross McAllan, 297 - Grant Robb, 300 - Connor Douglas, 311 - Keifer Brown.

The final home match in the pennant league was played last week against Northern Golf Club. In a very tight affair Stonehaven produced a 3-2 win. This was thanks mainly to the final group pairing of Alan Cruickshank and Stuart Dempster who came from 2 down with 2 to play to snatch a vital half point.

Results: Neil Irvine and Keith Douglas won 4&3, Ross Anderson and Scott Murray lost 1 down, Michael Wood and Barry McGillivray won 3&2, Steve Guzik and Ross McAllan finished all square, Alan Cruickshank and Stuart Dempster finished all square.

The final pennant match will be at the Links against Bon Accord on Thursday.

The Men’s Open competition was played on Saturday. What started off as warm, calm weather eventually turned into monsoon conditions flooding the greens around lunchtime. After an hours delay conditions did not improve and it was decided to abandon the competition and re-arrange it for 13th August. Please contact the club for a new tee time. No entry fee will be required if you have already paid.
