Stonehaven’s already packed Hogmanay festival is set for another major boost - with a five-day fairground attraction.

Carnival rides will be set up in the town’s leisure centre car park from December 28 through to New Year’s Day with everything from dodgems to waltzers. There will also be a number of mini rides for little ones and a selection of side stalls.

This is in addition to the world-famous Hogmanay Fireballs ceremony in the Old Town’s High Street and the annual Open Air In The Square concert, this year starring 80s pop legends The Human League.

Stonehaven’s New Year festivities have already been compared to competing with Edinburgh and this week tourist guide Travel placed the town in the top five of it’s list of favourite Scots Hogmanays.

Michelle Ward of Stonehaven Town Partnership said today: “Once again it’s all happening in Stonehaven - the wee gem with the big sparkle. We had an amazingly successful pre-Chrismas extravaganza two weeks ago with a torch-lit parade and lights switch-on and now we are set to bring thousands of visitors to Stonehaven for an amazing Hogmanay package.”

The Hogmanay Market Square gig will also feature top folk act The Peatbog Faeries, former X Factor contestant Emily Middlemas, Scots singer/songwriter Carrie Mac and radio DJ Harry Butler.

Other activities in the town include a pre-Hogmanay warm-up on December 29 with the Old Blind Dogs and special guests The Lorelei in Stonehaven Town Hall, a family karaoke night the following night also in the hall and a Hogmanay Stonehaven Folk Festival ceilidh again in the town hall. On New Year’s Day CLIC Sargent’s seventh annual Dip with a Nip takes place at Stonehaven harbour in aid of children and young people with cancer.

Stonehaven’s popular Land Train will make special town trips on Saturdays and Sundays from now until December 27 and 28.

Stonehaven’s famed Fireballs procession will also be taking place on Hogmanay, with swingers takiing their ususal route from the harbour, up the High Street and back again.

Tickets for Hogmanay with The Human League are available online from www.oaits.org or Ma Simpson’s music shop in Evan Street, Stonehaven.

First Aberdeen is offering coach excursions leaving Aberdeen between 6:30pm and 9:00pm from the City Centre on Hogmanay.

There will also be buses running from the south to Stonehaven, one starting at Forfar (7:30pm) and picking up at Brechin (7:45pm) and picking up at Laurencekirk (8pm) and another coach starting at Montrose (8pm) and picking up at Inverbervie (8:20pm) All coaches will all return around 00:45 after the event.
