Local chipper secures star status
A North-east fish and chip shop has been listed as one of the top five sustainable restaurants in the UK.
The Bay Fish and Chips at Stonehaven has achieved a three star rating from the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), placing it among the highest rated restaurants in the UK.
The Bay, which was launched in 2006 and is run by husband and wife team Lindsay and Calum Richardson, is also now the only fish & chip shop in the UK with a three star rating. The business was assessed across 14 key areas of sustainability, covering everything from the sourcing of their produce to how they manage their waste and energy, as well as how they treat their staff and engage with the local community.
The takeaway was originally rated by the SRA in August of this year and achieved a two star rating, however Mr Richardson was determined to make the improvements in order to gain the full star rating.
Mr Richardson said: “This is a brilliant achievement for the business and for all the hard work the team has put in. We are passionate about sourcing the best produce for our customers and we manage our energy and waste and support our local community. The SRA audit has allowed us to focus on the bigger picture for our business and it’s effect on our community and the environment and customers have responded really well to what we’re doing.”
