Mearns folk will have the chance to preview a major new community facility before it formally opens its doors later this month.
An open day at Mearns Academy Community Campus in Laurencekirk will take place this Sunday, August 17, between 10.30am and 4pm.
It will give local people a chance to look around the site’s community facilities, along with sections of the new secondary school.
The £24million campus on Aberdeen Road, part-funded by the Scottish Futures Trust, has been under construction since 2012. It features a public library, theatre, drama and dance studios along with meeting rooms, a conference suite, kitchens, computer rooms and interview rooms.
Sports and leisure facilities include a four-court games hall, fitness room, aerobics studio and changing rooms, with an artificial pitch and two grass pitches outside the building.
The campus also offers free wi-fi facilities and a coffee bar, along with an unmanned police office where arrangements can be made to meet an officer.
As well as being able to see the facility, visitors will have the chance to try out a range of sporting activities including badminton, volleyball, football and hockey, as well as fitness machines.
Younger visitors will be able to take part in Bookbug sessions in the library and browse new stock. Other attractions for children will include a bouncy castle and bodyzorbing sessions.
Refreshments will be available, and there will also be some limited access to the 640-pupil academy on the day.
A series of events and taster sessions for sports, community and cultural activities are to take place over the next few weeks.
Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Committee, Cllr Isobel Davidson, said: “This is a great opportunity for people to get their first glance at this brand new facility for the Mearns and find out more about the community activities that will be on offer.’’
Infrastructure Services Committee chair, Cllr Peter Argyle, added: “The campus is the latest in a series of major infrastructure projects being delivered by Aberdeenshire Council through its capital plan and provides great opportunities for community use.
Mearns Academy Community Campus formally opens to the public next Thursday, August 21.
