The first weekend of the month saw a squad of twenty swimmers aged 11-17 from South Aberdeenshire Swimming (SAS), including three from the Stonehaven area, travel south of the border for the annual two-day City of Sunderland Firecracker Meet.

The squad returned home with a superb total of 49 medals, and were delighted to be placed fifth club overall in the face of stiff local competition.

Stonehaven’s Ailsa Beck (13) was placed third girl overall in her age group, with silver medals in the 100 backstroke and 50 butterfly, and bronze in the 50 free. Ailsa also qualified for finals in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle events.

Also from Stonehaven, Kieran Preston (15), took bronze in the 200 breaststroke, and swum an excellent 100 breaststroke heat to qualify for the final, in which he finished a creditable fourth. Rookie Megan Grant, from Drumlithie, competing in a 50m pool for the first time, rose admirably to the challenge, taking silver in the 50 fly.

SAS Lead Coach Kerry Christie, said: “This was an exciting and rewarding weekend’s swimming for South Aberdeenshire. Opportunities to compete in a 50m pool don’t come very often; our swimmers gave it their all and they should be very proud of what they achieved – not only in terms of medals and personal best times, but in their approach to this meet, gaining from and building on their experiences over the duration of the weekend”.
